- Quadruple cabling guarantees the functioning of patient facilities
Reka Cables Ltd supplied more than 500km of cable to the Quattroservices Oy's biggest electric job of all time: the extension of the main building of Helsinki University Central Hospital and the new Meilahti Triangle Hospital. The job was completed between 2008 and 2010 and included the entrance to the main hospital, electronics to the operational wing and the Triangle Hospital. The total area of these premises is 30 000m² with 225 beds for patients. The new hospital has, amongst others, a dialysis unit, MRI diagnosis department and cardiac intensive care unit. The cables were supplied via SLO.

This target sets special demands for the electrical network
- The electrical network is four times that of cabling ordinary premises. In addition to the normal electrical network, we installed reserve networks, hospital equipment networks and networks trailing behind UPS. "We used loads of rising mains", Kimmo Lehtonen, the manager responsible for the Quattroservices O electronics job recalls. Lehtonen also mentions that fireproof cables were naturally used for cabling the hospital reserve power and UPS equipment.

Challenging project completed within the agreed timetable
The hospitals are situated in a logistically difficult area: they are in a very built-up area with heavy traffic. The challenges to the delivery of the equipment were met, however. The overall timetable was observed and the resource management was exemplary. At best there were 50 electronics and telecommunications engineers at the site. The longest pulls of the rising mains were 120m, from the cellar to the machine room on the eighth floor. The routes for the rising mains were challenging: one pull weighed more than 1 000kg. The engineers performed miracles!
Why choose Reka for a partner?
- The overall timetable was tight and therefore we decided to concentrate our cable purchases to one manufacturer. We wished to order reliable cables with firm delivery dates and appropriate price level. Continuing availability and excellent customer service when project requirements changed made sure that the job was completed smoothly from start to finish. Because installation work in the premises was difficult, the fact that Reka MMJ cables, for example, are easy to peel and bend speeded up the work and made it easier, Kimmo Lehtonen concludes.
